About BBQ+
Who We Are
The Center for Black, Brown, and Queer Studies (BBQ+) activates, connects, and mobilizes educators, researchers, and activists from marginalized communities.
Our mission is to dismantle the structural barriers that prevent the full participation and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, as well as members of the LGBTQ+ community, in spaces of learning and education.
We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and a fully virtual independent center built on solidarity and generosity. We strive to create an alternative space that addresses inequities by raising historical and cultural awareness around issues of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, citizenship status, and colonialism.
We believe that this work has a positive ripple effect in society. When educators, researchers, and activists from marginalized communities are empowered to share their own histories, those around them are similarly driven to incorporate social justice into every aspect of their lives.
Our name reflects our commitments:
Black → Critical race theory
Brown → Postcolonial & Indigenous theory
Queer → LGBTQ+ studies
+ → Continuously expanding our areas of focus.
What We Do
Our core programs explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, citizenship status, and colonialism.
1. Our annual academic fellowship
Through our fellowship, we offer mentorship, career development advice, and writing support to the next generation of educators, researchers, and activists.
2. The Pedagogy Lab
The Pedagogy Lab is a collaborative space where researchers, educators, and activists collectively create, share, and implement open educational resources. It hosts the summer pedagogy fellowship and the annual pedagogy conference.
3. Independent research initiatives
Our current major research initiative is the Boarding School Education History Project.
4. Media and publications
We create and host open educational resources, podcasts like Ventricles and Rage to Heal, and journals and magazines like Osiris and Cosmologics.
