Connecting Communities Digital Initiative: Artist/Scholar in Residence (Library of Congress)

The Library of Congress’s Connecting Communities Digital Initiative focuses on the ways technology can enable storytelling and expose more people to the Library’s expanding digital collections. The Artist/Scholar in Residence program supports artists or scholars in the creation of new scholarly and/or artistic works that imaginatively study, experiment with, and/or critique the Library’s digital collections, materials, and/or services. Proposed projects should center on one or more of the following groups: Black, Indigenous, Hispanic or Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and/or other communities of color in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, territories and commonwealths (Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands).

The program is open to a broad array of artists and scholars, including (but not limited to): visual artists, conceptual artists, dancers, journalists, cultural critics, independent scholars, academic scholars, and cultural heritage practitioners, including librarians.

Managing Director, Movement For Black Lives (M4BL)

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) is an ecosystem of organizations and individuals creating a shared vision and strategy to win rights, control, power and resources for Black people. Building on the legacy and strategies of past movements, the Movement for Black Lives has created a broad political home for Black organizers, activists, and their organizations. Our ecosystem is held together by politics of abolition, anti-capitalism and radical Black Queer Feminisms and a value system that fights for the marginalized amongst us. M4BL is seeking a new senior leader and organization-builder to serve in the role of Managing Director. In partnership with the Executives, the Managing Director will develop and drive an operational strategy to maximize M4BL’s assets including its people power, politics, as well as financial and operational resources, to build the power necessary to change the lives of our members, leaders and communities. Location: Remote, with 20-30% travel requirements. Reports to: Infrastructure & Operations Executive. Assistant Professor, Science, Technology, and Society (MIT)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professor positions, open to all areas of specialization within STS. We welcome applications from scholars whose research and teaching focus on any aspect of the social, cultural, historical, political, or ethical dimensions of science, technology, medicine, or other technical domains. We are especially interested in identifying colleagues who bring new methods and perspectives to understanding science and technology in society, and who extend the methodological, thematic, geographic, and/or chronological reach of our faculty. Collegiate Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (University of Michigan)

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan (U-M) offers its students an outstanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts at a premier research institution, and is dedicated to building a broadly diverse and inclusive scholarly environment. LSA is continuing its successful Collegiate Fellowship faculty hiring initiative as part of its second 5-year DEI Strategic Plan, which will launch in September 2023. In collaboration with the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), the LSA Collegiate Fellowship Program aims to hire 32 exceptional scholars who are committed to building a diverse intellectual community over the next five years. Scholars can be hired as early-career scholars not yet in tenure track positions, or as early-in-rank associate professors. Tenure-track Assistant Professor, African Literatures and Cultures (University of British Columbia)

The Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in African Literatures and Cultures at the level of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. We are open to applications from all historical and contemporary fields and, while we are searching for a scholar of Anglophone literatures, we welcome comparative approaches. Candidates should demonstrate an active engagement with the theories and methodologies currently informing the field of African literatures and cultures (broadly defined, including comparative and diasporic African, Afro-Caribbean, and/or Afro-Latinx studies). An interest in Black Studies would also be an asset. Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Public History (Rutgers University)

The Department of History at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Public History to begin in fall 2024. The department welcomes applications from candidates who work in all regional fields and time periods but is particularly interested in scholars who work in the areas of historical memory, historic preservation, museum work, oral history, or digital humanities. Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Digital Publics and Promotional Cultures (Simon Fraser University)

The School of Communication at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, BC, Canada) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Digital Publics & Promotional Cultures. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to, mediated/networked publics, affective publics, the attention economy, branding & influencer culture, microcelebrity, and the intersections of mass media and social media. Assistant/Associate Professor, Global Blackness and African Diaspora Studies (Yale)

The Program in Ethnicity, Race, and Migration is looking to hire a full-time scholar at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (with tenure), with an initial five-year appointment in Global Black and African Diaspora Studies, beginning July 1, 2024. The Program seeks candidates whose research and teaching focus on the formations and lived experiences of Blackness, with emphasis on global, comparative, indigenous, or transnational perspectives drawn from African, Indigenous, Asian, Middle Eastern, European, or Latin American and Caribbean contexts. Identified areas of interest for this search include: historical formations of race, indigeneity, and Blackness; labor, formal/informal economies, and syndicalism; community building, politics, and social movements; visual and expressive cultures; critical ecologies, climate displacement, and environmental racism; comparative colonialisms and settler states; racial analysis of education, health, and wealth; comparative South-South mobility and solidarities; global anti-Blackness; and African/diasporic queer and feminist activism. Tenure track position, Queer/Trans Studies (U Mass Boston)

The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure track assistant position beginning September 1, 2024. This position will support the undergraduate minor in Queer and Transgender Studies. Assistant Professor, African American History (Drake University)

The History Department at Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa) is excited to launch this search for a tenure-track assistant faculty member. This is a 9-month appointment beginning in August 2024. Teaching and research track position, Medicine, Science and the Humanities (Johns Hopkins University)

The Medicine, Science, and the Humanities Program (MSH) at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) seeks applicants for a Teaching and Research Track (TRT) Faculty at the rank of lecturer in medical anthropology, anthropology of science and technology, STS, or other related or allied fields. The initial appointment will be for three years, starting January 2024. The position is renewable and eligible for promotion. The lecturer will have teaching and administrative responsibilities in the MSH Program: teaching two undergraduate courses per semester, including MSH-required courses, advising undergraduate students, and participating in different program events alongside other faculty. Ph.D. for research on the histories of science, medicine, and/or the environment in the Global South, Department of History (University of California Santa Cruz)

The Department of History at UC Santa Cruz is recruiting up to two PhD students to begin in the fall of 2024 to pursue research on the histories of science, medicine, and/or the environment in the Global South. Applicants may specialize in the study of the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, South Asia, East Asia, or indigenous communities across the globe (including North America). Applicants may – but need not – be from the geographies that fall within the broad category of the Global South as long as their research agenda is focused on the geographies described.

In addition to university support, successful applicants will receive additional funding intended to support for language training and research from a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation on the theme of “The History of Science at the Interface of Biomedical and Environmental Concerns,” whose Principal Investigator is Jennifer L. Derr (History).

Call for papers/proposals: Conference on Queer and Trans Studies in Religion — University of California, Riverside

February 16-18, 2024 at the University of California, Riverside and over Zoom (hybrid)

The program committee of the UCR Conference on Queer and Trans Studies in Religion welcomes proposals for our sixth annual conference.

This year, we are introducing a thematic element to the conference; consequently, we are especially interested in proposals addressing 1) decolonizing practices in and 2) transnational approaches to trans and queer studies in religion. However, we also welcome proposals on all topics relevant to trans and queer studies in religion. In addition, following our tradition, we invite all who are interested in taking part to co-create the conference with us. What do you need from this conference? What would you like to have included? We welcome creative proposals, including performances and exhibits; proposals for workshops and informal discussion spaces; proposals for work-in-progress sessions; conventional paper and panel presentations; and any other possibility you can dream up. Call for papers/proposals: American Association for the History of Medicine 2024 Conference

The American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) invites abstracts for papers in any area of the history of health, healing, and medicine for its 97th annual meeting. The AAHM welcomes proposals for papers, roundtables, panels, posters, and workshops on the history of medicine, disease, and health broadly defined, including the history of medical ideas, practices, institutions, and technologies; the history of healing, disability, illness, disease, pharmaceuticals, and public health; and the history of peoples’ experiences of health, illness, and disability. We invite proposals that engage with biomedical and non-biomedical therapeutic systems and traditions in all eras and regions of the world, and that examine relations and historical processes of power in medicine and health. Call for papers/proposals: Devil 2024 Conference

May 15-18, 2024 at University of King’s College, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (in person)

The Devil 2024 conference explores the nature, significance, and operation of demonism and demonization across the western tradition. The conference will bring together scholars interested in the social and cultural construction of the devil and the impact of demonism across different chronological periods and from diverse methodological backgrounds. It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue that addresses challenging questions about how notions of the demonic are shaped by cultural priorities and anxieties, by professional discerners and the media, and by discourses of fear and safety. Devil 2024 will investigate why these images repeat through the ages and why they continue to have still have resonance in the modern world.

The Programme Committee welcomes proposals for 20-minute papers, for panels (generally consisting of three papers), and workshops or round-tables dealing with any aspect of demonism and its manifestation in the western tradition. Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted by October 15th, 2023. Learn more and submit proposals.

Praise Iyiewuare, doctoral student at the University of Vermont, is seeking Black queer women in the U.S. age 18-50 for her dissertation research. Participants will answer a 40-minute online survey about experiences of pleasure, memory, and trauma and will receive a gift card for their time.
