Branding makeover, new TikTok, and future merch!

BBQ+ brand update

If you’ve visited our website or social media this month, you may have noticed that we’re sporting a fresh look, including a new logo and new colors, fonts, and images.

Over the past year, the BBQ+ team collaborated with designers Nadine Zaza and Mariam Ibrahim to update our branding. The result is an aesthetic that more effectively conveys who we are: Speculative, dynamic, and experimental. Rigorous and playful. Unequivocally Black, brown, and queer. A fully virtual organization with academic roots that forges community beyond institutions.

Our identity as an organization is fluid, but the new branding is more representative of who our community is, who our supporters are.
- Ashley Butler

As we apply the new design to our various platforms over the next few weeks, we appreciate your patience with any tech hiccups!

Please note: If you link to a page on the BBQ+ website anywhere, you’ll want to double-check the link, as some of them have changed.

Illustrative BBQ+ design

The new BBQ+ logo, lowercase characters "bbq+" in blocky, stylized text, sits on top of a gold background. Text underneath reads, "The Center for Black, Brown & Queer Studies"

New BBQ+ logo

Our updated logo evokes blocky, digital quotation marks — like BBQ+, straddling digital and print worlds.

One of our priorities was conveying that this is a Center with a lot of heart of its own that doesn’t feel dry and institutional.

New TikTok account

Along with our refreshed brand image, we’re excited to launch our new TikTok account. Follow us at @bbqplus_ for video updates of our ongoing projects — like inside looks at our research trips, interviews with BBQ+ scholars, and open educational content that you can reuse in your teaching.

Merch coming soon

We can’t wait to start offering merchandise with our new designs. Our team is working hard to make this vision a reality, and we’re currently testing out various pieces, including apparel, mugs, water bottles, notebooks, silk scarves, and tote bags.

Stay tuned to our newsletter and social media for updates!

Please note: the images below are prototypes and may not reflect final merchandise designs.
